Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka, or Sri Lanka, which was called between 1948 and 1972 as Ceylon and was known to Muslims as Serendip, and its official name is the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (in Sinhala: ශ්රී ලංකාව, in English: இலங்கை), is an island country located in the northern Indian Ocean in the south of the subcontinent, in South Asia. Sri Lanka has maritime borders, in the north, with India, which is about 31 kilometers (19.3 miles) away, and with the Maldives, in its southwest.
